In these tumultuous times AtlMFA are embarking on a new a-n funded programme about 'Unknown Futures'. We will be exploring this theme during the residency with a variety of events and a 2 day group exhibition at the end of the week.

Open meeting Tuesday 2nd May 6.30-9

AltMFA will be starting the residency with a version of our usual weekly meeting - open to all. Come join us, get an idea of what AltMFA is and help us share and learn together. Bring an object, text, image or idea related to 'Unknown Futures' theme - be it something by someone you've found inspiring or something from your own practice. Bring a snack to share as well! No need to book, just ring the Guest Projects doorbell.

Weekend residency events

On Saturday the exhibition will begin at 1pm with animal visualisation exercise with artist Irene Pulga (approx 30 mins)

Open School East, Monday 8th - Sunday 14th May

The associate artists of Open School East invite you to join them at Guest Projects to share what they have been developing since undertaking the study programme in February 2017

Open School East’s associates will present and continue to construct a multi-form art work, which takes Hans Christian Anderson’s 1844 fairytale The Nightingale as a tongue-in-cheek point of departure. The associates have used a limited palette of materials including plaster, clay and latex, and have united as one group to create a “total art work” under the direction of Matthew Darbyshire and visiting artists* working in the fields of painting, sculpture, sound, writing, costume, choreography, public art and film.

The weekend of Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May will also offer a programme of activities including a class on human lie detection, a plaster casting workshop, Nightingale-inspired karaoke, live performances and the broadcast of the sound piece D O N G on the hour from 12noon.

Open School East’s 2017 associate artists are: Chloe Ashley, Roxanne Gatt, Emma Gibson, George Harding, Jessica Jordan-Wrench, Kris Lock, Jo Murray, Louis Joe Sainsbury, Leandro Stafford, Josephine Sweeney, Sara Trillo, Emily Whitebread and Jacob P Woods.

* Thank you to Melissa Appleton, Yemi Awosile, Lucy Beech, Pablo Bronstein, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Nicolas Deshayes, Milo van der Maaden, Sophie Mallett, Tom Morton, Eddie Peake and Jessica Warboys.

Open School East is an informal space for artistic leaning that brings together a free study programme for emerging artists and a multifaceted programme of events, activities and training open to all.

Open School East was originally founded in 2013 in East London, in response to spiralling tuition fees and student debt, and the decrease in both studio provision and civic spaces in the capital. In early 2017, we relocated to the coastal town of Margate where we continue to open up creative opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds.
