London Community Response Fund

The London Community Response Fund is administered by City Bridge Trust, the City of London Corporation’s charitable funder, and was created at the start of the coronavirus crisis with initial contributions of £1 million each from the Mayor of London and City Bridge Trust.

It is part of a capital-wide effort co-ordinated by the membership network London Funders, which awards grants from public and private sector funders to help charities and voluntary organisations cope with the impact of the pandemic.

As a result of the current global crisis affecting arts spaces across the U.K., Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects space in Hackney had to close its doors, temporarily halting their current 2020 residency programme.  In June 2020, Guest Projects launched Guest Projects Digital; an online space for collaborations, creations and cultural exchanges to temporarily replace the physical space.

Yinka Shonibare CBE (RA) is a British-Nigerian artist based in London, whose multi-disciplinary practice explores colonialism and post-colonialism within the context of globalisation. Through examining race, class and the construction of cultural identity, Shonibare’s works comment on the tangled interrelationship between Africa and Europe, and their respective economic and political histories.

For the past decade, Yinka has been running Guest Projects from his London studio, offering emerging artists of any discipline the opportunity to develop collaborations, have access to a free project space for 1 month – a laboratory of ideas; a testing ground for new thoughts and actions.

Building on the success of the project in London, in 2019 Yinka established The Yinka Shonibare Foundation (UK), a UK registered charity dedicated to facilitating international multi-disciplinary cultural exchange and developing creative practices through residencies and international collaborations.  It provides the governance, coordination, monitoring and development support for Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation in Nigeria and Guest Projects in London UK.  It does this through Governance, Fundraising, Advocacy and Dissemination.

Yinka’s inspiration behind the foundation is the need to break down traditional barriers of privilege, wealth, lack of infrastructure and limited opportunities across Africa.  To create space and opportunities for international cultural exchange and cross fertilisation between established and emergent practitioners and researchers.

Gasworks, established in 1994, is a non-profit contemporary visual art organisation working at the intersection between UK and international practices and debates. Gasworks is the hub of Triangle Network, a global network of artists and visual arts organisations that support professional development and cultural exchange amongst artists, curators and other arts professionals throughout the world.
